I can see the gasket breaking

That’s actually a trick of the eye. The gasket comes pre-broken.

I saw a new Impreza hatch the other day. It’s quite a good looking car.

Slow-mo car crashes never get old.

I really want to see a small overlap crash test video where the wall gets damaged by the car.

Impressive, car safety has improved so much over the last 10 or 15 years its insane. Yeah weight penalties suck, but look at this shit, shrugging off a crash that would kill me in my E36.

If someone told me I had to buy a new car today with my own money, I’d give the hatch a long look. Looks nice inside too. Hope the next WRX comes as a hatch too ...

Serious question: have any IIHS crash cars been drivable after they’ve been crashed?

That was a nice deflect. I bet the door still opens!

The weight gain is true in most cases; however, in the last 10 years (‘07 vs ‘17), the Impreza in base trim with the 5-speed has lost 42 lbs. Both are still quite a bit heavier than the ‘90s version.

Damn, I’m impressed... virtually no frame bend in the driver’s compartment :0

Deflecting the entire car, the best way to pass this test. All the Volvos behave in this way.
The cars that fail are the ones where the frame eats the entire deceleration, bouncing the car back the way from which it came.

Stay tuned. I’m inthe middle of writing a giant post comparing the weight gain of 6 compact cars over the last 20 years. The Impreza is one. I have most of the text written and all of the numbers, but I still need to make graphs and add photos. Depending on how well received it is I plan to turn it into a series for different vehicle classes. Hopefully I’ll post it by the end of the week.

I never understood why they killed off the hatch in the first place. That and the roof rack mounting points.

Yeah, so many people around these parts pine for a new CRX that could get 50 mpg and be fun to drive. I’m get that sentiment, but I’d like to not die in a crash.
